Even after 53 years, Horus, Prince of the Sun is still visually impressive to the extent my eyes felt overwhelmed by the amount of movement in a single scene. Directed by Isao Takahata with Miyazaki as key animator, you've got the foundation for Studio Ghibli 17 years before their formation. Flying Phantom Ship is easily the most entertaining anime movie the 1960's have to offer. I'm shocked by how much content they could pack into an hour. In fact, my main complaints about most 60's anime movies are that they only contain 30 to 45 mins of content in 90 minutes. Instead, Phantom Ship is a constant barrage of shocking plot twists within a narrative containing horror, mystery, drama, suspense, and action. What immediately caught my attention with this anime was how rich its history is. The quality of a fantasy's world building is usually a good indicator of its quality. Anime is a form of art.It's meant to be enjoyed for more than just its story alone. Otherwise, we'd all be reading books instead. Some of the most popular anime movies reinforce this idea, such as Ninja Scroll, Redline, and Akira. Unfortunately, some anime fall into the abyss of obscurity only to be revisited by those who can't appreciate its charm. Ai City has a pretty bad story, but I still enjoyed its visuals. As you can see, the anime is basically a fever dream where its story makes as much sense as its visuals. For example, why is this naked guy in a fishbowl on top of a giant body? Sure, there's an explanation, but if you're expecting it to make sense, you're missing the point. In addition to its bizarre character designs, its color palette was equally intriguing. Instead of painting everything the correct color, they chose a cool color palette with highlights of their opposing colors, even if it's not consistent throughout the movie. The story is set...

Detective Conan Movie 1, a surprisingly thrilling movie perfect for fans of the series and newcomers alike. Detective Conan Movie 1: The Time Bombed Skyscraper is an intense blend of Die Hard 3 and Speed as Conan races around the city following clues in a desperate attempt to save lives before they're blown away by powerful explosions. If you've never seen any Conan or Case Closed anime, then I think its first movie can be a great entry point as it briefly recaps. However, His backstory is never meant to be the focal point of the plot anyways. The main appeal of the franchise is its episodic mysteries. The actual timeline operates similarly to The Simpsons. Sure it's a little strange that Conan is drugged and transformed into a kid, but I don't see it as that big of a deal, considering it's not the main focal point. The Wonderful World of Puss in Boots balances its beautiful visuals and fluid animation with a properly paced adventure filled with comedy. While Puss in Boots isn't nearly as elaborate or ambitious as something like Horus, Prince of the Sun, its simplicity as a kids' movie works in its favor. Plot The story follows two main characters. Twilight of the Dark Master is the type of anime I review not for its story, but because many talented artists contributed 110% effort, just for someone else to give a full 2% to its story. Everything about this anime feels like it should have come out in the 80s, for better or worse. On the plus side, we get the gritty, futuristic cityscape hand-painted by the same guy who did the background art for "Macross Do You Remember Love" which I'll be reviewing in 2 days. We also get some pretty gruesome demon transformations and kill scenes, but aside from that, there's not even a modicum of potential with anything else. Tokyo Revengers follows the life of 26-year-old, Takemichi, who by his own admission is a pathetic virgin who peaked in middle school. Plot The story follows a supernatural entity cast down to earth with the ability to replicate anything without life that creates a strong feeling. For example, it takes the shape of a wounded wolf who dies next to it. Now that it has legs, it's free to wander the land and become acquainted with people, learn from them, and take their form once they die. I enjoyed watching the creature's journey because it starts at square one, learning the basics of walking and eating. It can feel the emotions of every life form around it, which prevents it from fighting or hunting. However, on occasion, it has no choice but to defend itself or its friends.
