Flying Phantom Ship is easily the most entertaining anime movie the 1960's have to offer. I'm shocked by how much content they could pack into an hour. In fact, my main complaints about most 60's anime movies are that they only contain 30 to 45 mins of content in 90 minutes. Instead, Phantom Ship is a constant barrage of shocking plot twists within a narrative containing horror, mystery, drama, suspense, and action.

PLOT
Its story follows Hayato, who's thrown into a wild adventure after a nearby car accident interrupts his family fishing trip. Of course, their efforts to save the couple are complicated by rain, leaving them to find shelter in the only nearby building, the most obviously haunted house I've ever seen.
What could go wrong?
At this point, I was wondering how much of the movie would take place in the haunted house. After all, it is titled Flying Phantom Ship, so where's the ship?. I can't say much about the plot due to its short runtime and many twists, but it goes way beyond ghosts.
In fact, there's huge government conspiracies, giant mechs, anti-war messages, backstory reveals, and even a bit of character development. One could argue that it does a little too much for an hour, and that's understandable.
I would rather watch an overambitious and dense movie than something underwhelming and lengthy. Not only does Phantom Ship excel in terms of excitement and plot progression, but also its remarkable visuals. It may not look like much by today's standards, but keep in mind this was the first full-color mech ever.
In addition to its nicely detailed sci-fi elements, it also did horror elements right by creating an ominous atmosphere brought to life through its sound effects.
Lastly, it also received an excellent HD remaster, assuring that this beautiful anime can be enjoyed for decades to come. Overall, I give Flying Phantom Ship a 9/10. Sure, it could be a little longer. I recommend everyone to check it out.
