Plot

The story follows Tsuneo, an intelligent college student working at a dive shop. One night after work, he coincidentally sees Josee, a girl in a wheelchair barreling down a hill heading straight for him. As she's ejected into the air, he has little time to react before she plows right into him.

Josee's grandmother and caretaker invite Tsuneo back to their home to have a meal while she covertly vets him for the role of being her caretaker. Upon accepting, he's given the guidelines of doing whatever she asks and never leaving the house with her by himself.

Ironically, this was the one thing Josee needed the most, as she primarily suffering from being sheltered by an overprotective family. Unfortunately, there aren't too many opportunities to meet someone who never leaves the house unless Tsuneo breaks in.

Although Josee's temperament puts her at odds with Tsuneo from the start, his adventuring nature identifies her struggles of confinement. He begins sneaking her out to places she's never been, which basically means anywhere as even the library amazed her.

I thought the movie did a great job fleshing out and balancing character development as I think they both had just as much to offer each other, though it may not seem that way at first.

They both have hobbies, long and short-term goals, internal and external struggles, and independent, meaningful interactions with side characters.

Additionally, numerous unexpected plot developments kept things exciting, tragic, and heartwarming, creating the perfect environment for our characters to develop. Aside from my thoughts on its introduction, which is honestly minuscule compared to how much it does well, my only real criticism is how much more enjoyable this would have been as a 6 or 12 episode series.

Overall

However, its creators did an outstanding job adapting a story so saturated with content into a reasonably-length film. Overall, I give Josee, the Tiger, and the fish a 9/10 for its compelling drama, heartwarming romance, tear-jerking conclusion, and breathtaking visuals.

I think this movie looks absolutely beautiful as you can see in this review. Plus the backgrounds are highly detailed. Overall, I think Josee the Tiger and the Fish is a great experience I recommend to everyone.
