Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness is directed by sam raimi and this is his first movie directing in almost 10 years.
Sam Raimi's Style
After spider-man no way home, Stephen strange is attending the wedding of his former flame christine and wondering what could have been when he runs into America chavez a young woman who seems to be the only person in existence with the ability to hop between universes and someone we all know is very interested in that particular superpower.
Because she wants to live in a universe where her children still exist. Wanda makes a great villain not only do we know her entire backstory thanks to Wanda vision. But she's also very menacing. At the start of the movie Wanda and strange have a discussion about morality. She calls him a hypocrite, because he gave thanos the time stone therefore sacrificing a lot of people that caused a lot of pain, but it was necessary to save the universe.
Wanda wants to be with her children and america chavez a superpower could cause universes to collapse onto each other. So by sacrificing one life murdering this young woman wanda gets what she wants her children and potentially saves the entire universe.
Wanda Maximoff is a Great Villain
Sam raimi directing wanda is a great villain. I wasn't expecting the movie to be this different from other marvel studio films. Because one murders a lot of people in this movie like a lot. There's this big battle scene at the beginning of the film at comartage where all the students and sorcerers shield the plays from wanda.
She can't get through with force so she gets inside the head of one of the students and then proceeds to murder everyone.
The movie really starts to get going after that scene. And there are some really great rainy moments in the movie. But there's a clear distinction between certain scenes that were very cut and dry and the sequences that were very much like a sam raimi movie and those are the ones i was waiting for.
For example at one point strange and chavez escape into the multiverse and wanda can't really follow them physically, but she does have the darkhold which contains a spell for dream walking.
CGI Work Is Top-notch
Dreamwalking is basically possessing your other universe self and that sequence was excellent. It's almost like a short little horror movie. We get the first person point of view the dutch angles i mean you can tell that in those scenes raimi really had fun.
I would say 70 percentage of it was made by the visual effects team. It's not that the visual effects are awful it does look great. It's just that most of the movie relies on those effects. However this movie does stand out from the other marvel movies. Because of sam raimi's input very much like taika waititi and james gunn did.
Background Score is perfect
Now the score was done by danny elfman. It was great for the most part. In between all the suspense and magical stuff there are quiet little moments between characters and quippy moments and in those scenes elfman's score felt a little dated. Those moments felt a little 90's.
It's look like a Horror Film
At some point strange escapes into another universe and meets the illuminati from the marvel comic series new avengers. And they are reed richards played by john krasinski captain marvel played by lashana lynch black bolt played by anson mount captain carter and yes a very elderly professor charles xavier.
Also you can't have a raimi movie without the legendary bruce campbell and he does have a funny little cameo selling pizza balls.
Of course it's by far not the best raimi movie nor is it the best marvel studios movie. But it's different enough to earn its own spot.
